2025 BioTRec Distinguished Lecture
The Translational Center of Academia Sinica invites Dr. Richard Harland, Distinguished C.H. Li Professor of Genetics, Genomics, and Development and Dean of the Division of Biological Sciences at the University of California, Berkeley, to give a lecture at the National Biotechnology Research Park on Friday, February 21, 2025.
Dr. Richard Harland is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and a Fellow of the Royal Society (UK). He has made groundbreaking contributions to vertebrate embryonic development, revealing key molecular pathways that shape the nervous system and body structure.
Building upon early Nobel Prize discoveries, Dr. Harland and his team have utilized amphibian embryos and expression screening techniques to identify genes, determining their functions through gain- and loss-of-function experiments. His notable research includes elucidating how the Spemann organizer regulates development via Bone Morphogenetic Protein (BMP) inhibitors such as Noggin, influencing neural and skeletal development. Additionally, he has extensively explored the roles of FGF, Wnt, and BMP signaling in neural crest and posterior neural plate formation. His research has profound implications for regenerative medicine, congenital disease treatment, and tissue engineering.
In this lecture, Dr. Harland will introduce his research and share the latest developments from the Division of Biological Sciences at UC Berkeley.
